He slept in his 1976 Ford when not performing gigs that provided a hotel, and he showered at gas stations or swimming pool showers.

In primary school, he was reprimanded and derided in front of his class by his school teacher for writing that he wanted to be on TV as a comedian and actor in an assignment about “What do you want to be in the future.” The teacher also called Steve’s parents to report his “attitude” at school.
Steve – who at the time had stuttering problems – went home that day worried about his parent’s reactions. While his mother was upset with him, was his father’s reaction that set him up for life. “My father told me to put my assignment paper in a drawer and read it every morning and night so that I won’t forget my dream”. And so, he did.
Despite reaching success later in life, Steve Harvey has had to fight through many challenges. He was once homeless and lived in his 1976 Ford Tempo for three years. Steve also faced times when he was unemployed and struggled with poverty.
Through it all, Steve persevered and never gave up on his dreams of becoming a successful actor and producer in the media industry. Today, he is regarded as one of the most popular actors in Hollywood and a role model to many people around the world.
Steve Harvey is the founder of the Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation, a philanthropic organization that provides youth outreach services. The organisation also hosts a yearly camp for fatherless children.
